How Do You Burn an eBook?: Book Burning in the DigitalAge
Introduction
There is something morbid yet fascinating about a burning pile of books. The horror of the Nazi book fires of 1933 has resonated with book historians, scholars, librarians, and readers into the 21st century. Book burning still occurs in the Digital Age, although the practice is evolving to meet the contemporary, media-saturated culture.
Purpose of this Website
The decision to explore how book burning has evolved since the 20th century was born from a love of World War II history and digital reading. Course readings regarding book burning, particularly the 1933 Nazi book fires, sparked independent research regarding more instances of 20th century book burnings. Eventually, a set of research questions presented themselves regarding the evolving digital environment of books and the sustainability of “traditional” book burning practices.
Therefore, the purpose of this website is to explore the history of book burning in recent modern history while examining its place, methods, and impact in the age of new media and digital reading.
